**SAN DIEGO –** The San Diego City Council has approved a landmark 52-year lease extension for the San Diego Zoo, a cornerstone of Balboa Park since 1916. The new agreement, which now runs until 2078, secures a significant new revenue stream for the city, earmarking millions of dollars for the maintenance and improvement of Balboa Park while reinforcing the Zoo’s long-term commitment to the region.
The decision, made during the City Council meeting on March 9, 2026, amends the Zoo's existing lease, which was set to expire in 2034. Under the new terms, the city will receive an annual payment of $3 million, set to increase by 3% each year starting in 2030. This translates to an estimated $330 million over the life of the lease, with funds deposited directly into the Balboa Park Paid Parking Program Fund to support the park's operations and capital projects.
Casey Smith, Chief of Housing and Community Development, presented the amendment, highlighting its mutual benefits. The agreement also establishes a 50/50 revenue-sharing model for the Zoo's parking lot, effective once parking revenue exceeds operational costs and the city's base payment. "The Zoo is a major contributor to local tourism, generating 3.9 million visits in 2024, with guests spending over $571 million in the region," Smith stated, emphasizing the Zoo's nearly $1 billion total economic impact and its support of almost 6,500 jobs.
The amendment introduces several key provisions, including the city's Zero Emissions Building Policy (ZEMBOP) and prevailing wage requirements for future projects. In a move to enhance community access, the Zoo is now required to provide at least $250,000 in complimentary admission tickets annually to local nonprofits and school groups.
This historic agreement not only solidifies the future of a world-renowned institution but also creates a vital, long-term funding mechanism to preserve and enhance Balboa Park, ensuring this civic treasure can be enjoyed by residents and visitors for generations to come.
