**CHULA VISTA, CA** – On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the City of Chula Vista hosted a special reception to commemorate Women's History Month, bringing together community leaders, elected officials, and residents to honor the profound contributions of women to the city. The event, held in a spirit of unity and recognition, highlighted the achievements of women across all sectors of the community.
The reception began with a welcoming atmosphere, featuring food and refreshments from Boca de Oro Market, a local woman-owned business. Mayor John McCann initiated the formal proceedings, emphasizing the importance of the month. "Each March, communities across the country celebrate Women's History Month as a time to recognize and honor countless contributions for women who have made to our history, our communities, and future," he stated, acknowledging the incredible women leaders in Chula Vista's government, education, healthcare, and business sectors.
Patrina Branch, Chair of the Human Relations Commission, followed with a land acknowledgment, paying respect to the Kumeyaay Nation, the traditional inhabitants of the region. She then recognized distinguished guests, including Deputy Mayor Cesar Fernandez, Council Member Carolina Chavez, and City Manager Tiffany Allen, before turning the microphone back to the mayor.
Council Member Carolina Chavez, the first woman to represent District One, delivered impassioned remarks. While proud of being a "first," she noted, "it's very unfortunate at this day and age we're still seeing many firsts." She urged continued appreciation for educators and all women whose work strengthens the community, stating, "When women succeed, our entire community grows stronger, more resilient, and more connected."
The event culminated with Mayor McCann presenting a city proclamation to Carla, the owner of Boca de Oro Market, officially declaring March as Women's History Month in Chula Vista. The proclamation encourages all residents to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women. The formal part of the evening concluded with an invitation for all women in attendance to come forward for a group photograph, symbolizing a collective of leadership and inspiration.
As the city reflects on this month of recognition, the celebration serves as both an acknowledgment of past progress and a call to action. It inspires the community to continue fostering an environment where future generations of women can lead, innovate, and shape a more equitable and prosperous Chula Vista for all.
